New Year’s Eve 2018

Do New Year’s Eve in Style!

Palmers Guide to New Year’s Eve 2018

The city of London comes alive on New Year’s Eve, welcoming in the new year with the extravagant Mayor of London’s Firework Display.  People from all around the globe make the journey here to witness London put on a show and briefly distract themselves from their very unachievable New Year’s resolutions (I will have abs one day).  The crowds surrounding erupt in unison, counting down the seconds from 10 to 1 as the Big Ben chimes, signalling a fleeting moment of silence.  The city is lit up and the fireworks explode, different colours contrasting with the night sky.  There’s definitely a sense of magic in the air.  Strangers becoming acquaintances, couples witnessing their first NYE together, friends all linking arms, families watching in awe.  This is definitely an event worthy of your bucket list.

Where to see the fireworks?

For the best view, we recommend the Victoria Embankment in Westminster.  There are various viewing areas along the Thames, Westminster and Waterloo Bridge.  Patrons must purchase tickets for 10 pounds, with a limit of 4 tickets per person.  Most of the best locations are sectioned off for ticket holders so it is definitely worth it.  Tickets are currently on sale and can be purchased here:

Some other ideas

If you don’t fancy being nestled in the crowd, there are other ways to view the fireworks.  Some people opt for seeing the display from a cruise whilst dining and enjoying a drink or two!  More information can be found here:

The Shard has also been a popular place for people to enjoy the fireworks.  Being the tallest building in Western Europe, you can only imagine how spectacular the views are.  You can enjoy lovely dining and drinking options whilst admiring the amazing scene of fireworks at the same time.  In addition, we think Primrose Hill will also be a great spot for the display.  This 78 metre hill is extremely popular throughout the year for its beautiful view of the city.  This isn’t an official area for the display but it will be a great spot to view the fireworks in the distance with great company and drinks of course!

More ideas for where to watch the display can be found here:

If you require other ideas on what else is on offer in London this NYE, you can find some useful information here:

Directions for the main event:

If you are staying with us, you can get to the fireworks display stress free by travelling via the underground.  The Jubilee line can be accessed from both the Swiss Cottage and Hill Spring/Willesden Green hostel, where it’s a 20 minute train ride from Swiss Cottage to Westminster Station or 30 minutes from Willesden Green Station.  Both stations are a short walk away from our hostels.  The Jubilee line can also get you to Waterloo Station, which is one stop further than Westminster station, depending on where you would like to watch the fireworks from.

It’s no lie that the city will be extremely busy on the night so we recommend that you use the TFL website to check for any station closures or detours en route to and from the event.  Transport for London will be offering free public transport across the city from 11:45pm-4:30am.

One last thing – local events

Our hostel locations can get you to London’s hotspots in minutes.  However, for local events we recommend Camden Town if you’re staying at our Swiss Cottage location, that’s where we’ll be!  A 15-minute bus ride on the 31 will take you to Camden Town, stress free!  There are various NYE events taking place here such as:

If you’re staying at our Hillspring hostel, you can enjoy NYE at Queensbury pub, which is walking distance from us.  They boast delicious food and drinks and it is the perfect location if you prefer a cosier night in whilst welcoming in the new year.

More events, however, will pop up closer to the night!

We should also make note that we will try our best not to cut your night short which is why we will be keeping both our hostel’s bars open until 2am (you’re welcome J).

Please get in touch if you have any enquiries or would like to make a booking!  We will be more than happy to assist!

Until next time!
